The story behind
Josef at the roadside
Mosul, Iraq December 2016
On a stone at the side of the main road between Erbil and Mosul in Northern Iraq sits 11-year-old Josef, who has been shot by a sniper in Mosul. A few meters from there a man is fighting for his life, his face is a bloody pulp, it is almost impossible to see that it is a human face. Ten meters or so in an other direction a woman covers her recently deceased husband with a brownish velvet throw, he was laying in an ambulance but was carried out when he died, the ambulance was better needed elsewhere.
Josef has lost his left eye. He is 11 years old and just wanted to play outdoors.
